Creating a stylish, customizable leather cover for your digital planner is easier than you might think. In this step-by-step tutorial, I’ll guide you through the process using Affinity Publisher.

Step 1: Set Up Your File

If you're starting fresh, you'll want to create a new file. Here’s how:

  1. Open Affinity Publisher.
  2. Go to File > New to create a new document.
  3. I set the document size to A4 with 8 pages. Adjust the colour settings as needed.
  4. Add a margin if desired, but it’s not necessary for this tutorial.
  5. Since the final product will be a PDF, there’s no need to add a bleed.
  6. Click Create to set up your document.

If you already have an existing file, you can skip this step and move on to adding the cover.

Step 2: Add a Picture Frame

To create the leather texture for your cover, you’ll need a picture Frame to act as a picture placeholder:

  1. Navigate to the Tools Panel and select the Picture Frame Tool.
  2. Draw a picture frame that covers the entire first page.

Step 3: Find and Insert a Leather Texture

Next, you’ll insert a leather texture:

  1. Go to the Stock Panel. If it’s not visible, enable it by going to Window > Stock.
  2. Search for a leather texture that suits your design. Drag and drop it into your picture frame.
  3. If the texture looks upside down (mine did!), use the Flip Vertical button from the Toolbar to correct it.

To keep things organized, rename the layer to "Leather" in the Layers Panel.

Step 4: Customize the Leather Colour

Now, you can customize the leather colour:

  1. Apply a Colour Overlay effect to the leather texture. By default, this will be black with 100% opacity.
  2. Change the Blend Mode to Colour or experiment with other modes to find one that works best for your desired look.
  3. If you want more flexibility, create a Global Colour:
  4. Go to the Swatches Panel and choose Add Global Colour from the menu.
  5. Name it something like "Planner Cover" and select a colour.
  6. Apply this global colour through the Layer Effects Panel.

Step 5: Add a Clasp

To give your cover a more realistic look, add a clasp:

  1. Use the Rounded Rectangle Tool to create a shape for the clasp. Adjust the size and shape as needed.
  2. Zoom in to work more precisely. Double-click the red smart handle (top left corner) to reset it if needed.
  3. To make the clasp look like leather, duplicate the leather texture layer, and drag it into the rounded rectangle shape.
  4. Apply an Outer Shadow effect to give the clasp some depth.

Step 6: Add a Snap to the Clasp

The clasp isn’t complete without a snap:

  1. Instead of a circle, use another Rounded Rectangle for more flexibility.
  2. Adjust the settings to create a circular shape.
  3. Apply a Global Colour for easy customization later. Add effects like 3D and Bevel/Emboss to make the snap more realistic.
  4. For a final touch, use the Crescent Tool to add a highlight to the snap. Apply a white fill and use the Transparency Tool to blend it naturally.

Step 7: Create Stitching

Add stitching to the clasp and cover for extra detail:

  1. Use the Rounded Rectangle Tool again to create a shape around the clasp.
  2. Remove the fill and add a Dashed Stroke. Adjust the dash and gap sizes to create the look of stitches.
  3. Apply 3D and Bevel/Emboss effects to the stitching.
  4. To make the stitching match the cover, use the Edit > Paste Style option to apply the same effects across all stitching elements.

Step 8: Mask the Cover for Rounded Corners

Finally, round off the corners of your cover:

  1. Lock all layers to avoid accidentally moving them.
  2. Add a new Rounded Rectangle that covers the entire page.
  3. Set the fill to transparent (no stroke or fill).
  4. Move your cover elements into this new rectangle to mask the corners.
