Version 1 of Skitch was awesome, it had every type of screen capture I could ever imagine needing. Sadly version 2 lost a lot of the features that made it the complete deal for my screen capture needs. It is for this reason that I keep the final version of Skitch v.1 installed and use it when I need a type of screen capture not supported by version 2.

Download Skitch for Mac v.1

Version 1 of Skitch is currently still available for download from https://evernote.com/skitch/

  1. Click on the disclosure triangle (1)
  2. Select the option to "Download the previous version of Skitch for Mac (1.0)" (2)

Unzip Skitch for Mac v.1

Once downloaded you will have a zip file called Skitch-1.0.12.zip.

Double click to unzip this file. The Skitch app will be extracted ready to be installed.

Rename the Skitch App

if you want to ensure you don’t overwrite any newer version of Skitch you may have installed rename the Skitch.app to Skitch Classic.

Then drag and drop the Skitch Classic app to your Applications Folder to complete the install.

Launch Skitch Classic

Whatever method you use to launch Skitch (here I’m using Alfred) make sure you run the original version 1.

Activating Frame Capture Mode

There are two ways to activate the Frame Capture mode:

  • From the Gear Icon (1) select Frame Snapshot (2)
  • Use the shortcut key Command & Shift & 7

Resizing the Capture Frame

Activating Frame Capture mode turns Skitch into a frame with a transparent central window.

Position this frame as required and scale by dragging the lower right corner.

Making the Capture

Once you have the required area contained within the frame you can capture the area using the Snap button on the right of the frame.

Annotate as Required

Annotate the capture if required using the annotation tools on the left of the Skitch window.

Reactivating Frame Capture Mode

When you are ready to take another Frame Capture you use the same options:

  • From the Gear Icon (1) select Frame Snapshot (2)
  • Use the shortcut key Command & Shift & 7

Repeat as Required

Once you have the required area contained within the frame you can capture the area using the Snap button on the right of the frame.

Annotate as Required Again

Once again annotate the capture if required using the annotation tools on the left of the Skitch window.
